Chapter 11
A presentation about the conflict between the Anglo-Saxons under Alfred and his children, and the Vikings. A look at how the two sides fought and the system of burhs that protected England. An activity in which students can decide the essential elements to put inside a burh, and sketch and label their own.
A presentation about The Great Heathen Army's invasion of England, and the use of danegeld (protection money raised through a one off tax) to keep them from raiding and conquering. An activity in which the children take the role of King Alfred and decide whether or not to pay the danegeld, making a list of pros and cons, along with a plan of what to do after or instead.
All reading comprehensions have two differentiated sets of questions at KS2 level. They all work from extracts of Enthralled: A Viking Saga, but the extracts are included, as are the answers to the questions.
